Backup History & Compliance Reports

Monitor backup operations, compare configurations, and ensure compliance with backup policies

Intermediate 15 minutes

Overview

Backup Manager provides comprehensive tools for monitoring your backup operations through two key features: Backup History and Backup Compliance.

Backup History Features:

  • View detailed logs of all backup operations
  • Compare configurations between backups
  • Preview configuration files directly in browser
  • Filter by device, status, and config type
  • Download configuration diffs

Backup Compliance Features:

  • Monitor device compliance status
  • Track backup success rates
  • Identify non-compliant devices
  • View compliance reasons

Both pages auto-refresh every 30 seconds to keep you updated with the latest backup status.

Backup History Statistics

At the top of the Backup History page, three statistics cards provide a quick overview:

  • Total Backups: Total number of backup operations in the selected time period
  • Successful: Backups completed successfully (SUCCESS or PARTIAL status)
  • Failed: Backups that failed due to connection issues, authentication failures, or errors

Filtering Options:

  • Device Filter: Select a specific device from the dropdown
  • Status Filter: Filter by All, Success, or Failed
  • Config Type: Filter by Running Config or Startup Config

Time Range Selection:

Use the time range buttons to view backups from different periods: 1 Hour, 6 Hours, 12 Hours, Day, 3 Days, 5 Days, 7 Days, 14 Days, or Month.

Compare Mode

Compare Mode allows you to compare two backup configurations from the same device to see what changed.

How to Use Compare Mode:

  • Step 1: Click the Compare Mode button in the header
  • Step 2: Check the boxes next to exactly two successful backups from the same device
  • Step 3: Click Compare Selected (2/2) to open the comparison view

Comparison View Features:

  • Green lines - Added content
  • Red lines - Removed content
  • Statistics showing lines added, removed, and changed
  • Switch between Running and Startup configs
  • Download the diff as a text file

Configuration Comparison

After selecting two backups, the comparison modal shows a side-by-side diff.

Comparison Modal Features:

  • Side-by-Side View: Older version on left, newer version on right
  • Synchronized Scrolling: Both panels scroll together
  • Line Numbers: Easy reference for each line
  • Config Type Selector: Switch between running and startup configs
  • Download Button: Export the diff to a text file

Understanding the Diff:

  • Green highlighted lines were added in the newer version
  • Red highlighted lines were removed from the older version
  • Unchanged lines appear in both columns without highlighting

Preview Configuration

Click the eye icon () in the Actions column to preview a configuration directly in the browser.

Preview Modal Features:

  • Line Numbers: Each line is numbered for easy reference
  • Syntax Highlighting: If changes were detected, added/removed lines are highlighted
  • Config Type Selector: Switch between Running and Startup configs (if both available)
  • Download Button: Download the configuration file to your computer

The preview is read-only and allows you to review configuration contents without downloading the file.

Backup Compliance

The Backup Compliance page helps you monitor which devices are meeting your backup policies.

How to Access:

  • Navigate to Backup Insights in the sidebar
  • Click on Backup Compliance

Compliance Statistics:

  • Total Devices: Number of network devices being monitored
  • Compliant: Devices with at least one successful backup in the time period
  • Non-Compliant: Devices that don't meet compliance requirements
  • Compliance Rate: Percentage of compliant devices

Compliance Status Indicators

Each device shows its compliance status with clear visual indicators:

  • ✓ COMPLIANT - Device has successful backup within selected time period
  • ✗ NON-COMPLIANT - Device has no successful backups within time period

Non-Compliance Reasons:

  • No backups in time period: No backup attempts were made
  • All backups failed: Backup attempts were made but none succeeded
  • Low success rate: Success rate is below the threshold
  • No recent successful backup: Last successful backup is too old

Non-compliant devices are highlighted with a red background for easy identification. Review these devices and take action - check connectivity, credentials, or run a manual backup.

Best Practices

For Backup History:

  • Regular Monitoring: Check the dashboard daily to ensure backups are running
  • Review Changes: When "Changes" shows "Yes", use Compare Mode to review what changed
  • Download Important Diffs: Save configuration change reports for audits

For Backup Compliance:

  • Track Success Rates: Devices below 90% may have intermittent issues
  • Appropriate Time Ranges: Use 1-7 days for operations, 14-30 days for audits
  • Address Non-Compliance Quickly: Non-compliant devices represent a risk
